People always ask me "Darian, how do you always look flawless and amazing?" (I'm not being cocky...they actually do). I always reply that it takes a lot of time, effort and skill to look the way I do every day. I don't roll out of bed looking like a glamazon (sadly). Luckily, I have been wearing the same makeup look since I was 15 so I have it down to a science (It only takes me about 35 minutes).

No, you're not looking at photos of Courtney Love, although the disheveled blonde hair, pale powdered skin, red lips, baby barrettes and tattered baby doll dresses may have fooled you. This is Kat Bjelland, lead singer/guitarist for the all-girl alt.rock band Babes In Toyland, who coincidentally was Courtney Love's BFF turned "frenemy", and who many credit with the creation of the "Kinderwhore" look in the early 90's (the look Courtney Love eventually made famous).

Kat was born in Oregon and moved to Portland after graduating high school in 1982. There she formed several rock bands without much success. In 1984 Kat met Courtney Love, who was looking to form an all-girl rock band called Sugar Baby Doll, and persuaded her to join as lead guitarist. They moved to San Francisco, where Kat and Court bonded over a love of recreational pharmaceuticals and formed a new all-girl band Pagan Babies. The band was quite short-lived and only played two gigs (they spent much more time getting fucked up than...you know...rehearsing/writing/performing) before breaking up in 1985.

In 1987, Kat moved to Minneapolis to form Babes In Toyland, and Courtney soon followed her to join as a replacement bassist. She was kicked out of the band twice (although they still remained close friends) before forming Hole in 1989. Babes In Toyland went on to be quite successful on the alt.rock scene and opened for Sonic Youth on their 1990 European tour. They eventually got signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1992 and were part of the Lollapalooza tour in 1993. Something fans of both bands noticed during this time was that Kat and Courtney looked kind of, well, similar! A major feud started between Kat and Courtney, who BOTH claimed, without a shadow of doubt, that she was the originator and true mastermind of the look. A feud that would only escalate each time one of these dueling friends bands would become more successful.

It certainly isn't uncommon for girl friends to be inspired by each others fashion sense and borrow each others clothes. Although when one starts to get fame and notoriety in said clothes, it certainly changes the game. In the video for Babes In Toyland's 1992 single "Bruise Violet", photographer Cindy Sherman appears as Kat's evil blonde, babydoll dress wearing doppelgänger (a not so thinly veiled allusion to Courtney) whom she strangles at the end. The video was hoped to be a huge success on MTV and firmly cement Kat as the creator of the "Kinderwhore" look to the general public. Unfortunately, the video was only shown a few times on the late-night alt.rock show 120 Minutes. Courtney trumped that ace by marrying Nirvana frontman and King of Grunge Kurt Cobain, becoming a darling of the tabloids and exposing the Kinderwhore look to the mass-media with Hole's mainstream success in 1994. However, when Kurt committed suicide in 1994, the first person to be by Courtney's side was Kat.

Matching Mourning Looks

It remains to be seen who actually originated the look. Is it possible that Courtney Love is a devious "look-kleptomaniac", who appropriated her best friends style and became a superstar? Well, stranger things have happened. Or was it Kat Bjelland who "Single White Femaled" her BFF? Maaaaaaybe. Nobody will really know for sure....except for these two rivals (well, and all their friends). Whatever the case...it certainly was one of the iconic looks of the 1990s. Brava ladies!

Nothing leaves me more breathless than the epic looks Madonna featured as Breathless Mahoney in 1990's Dick Tracy! I vividly remember seeing this in the theater during the summer of 1990, as it was billed as that years epic comic book blockbuster à la Tim Burton's Batman the year before. This was my first real exposure to Madonna....and watching her Blond Ambition HBO special a month later sealed the deal: Madonna obsession for life! While the cinematography, set design, makeup and visuals were outstanding, it received mixed reviews from critics. For me, Madonna is really the only reason to watch the film. Cast as a seductive torch singer in the mob-run cabaret Club Ritz, who is out to snag the dashing police detective Dick Tracy, Madonna shines in the role. It is certainly one of her best acting roles, plus any excuse to have her sing and dance in a film is never a bad thing.

The comic strip Breathless Mahoney only appeared twice, and was very much inspired by 1940's film star Veronica Lake.

Madonna begged and pleaded with director/producer/star Warren Beatty to cast her in the role, but he had his mind set on Melanie Griffith. When Madonna offered to work at scale ($1,440 a week), she was finally able to win the part (starting to date him also helped, or course). The first thing Warren Beatty made her do was bleach her hair (she had recently grown it out to her natural color, see "Like A Prayer" video) and also gain 10 lbs, so it would appear as though she was "poured into her dresses". Her figure became so voluptuous that during her performance of "More" in the film, her breasts kept popping out of her silver lamé gown. The makeup department had to literally GLUE her into the dress, which made them extremely nervous because it hadn't been tested. If the glue had discolored her or caused any sort of allergic reaction they were quoted as saying, "we would be the guys that destroyed a national treasure"!

Madonna's role as Breathless Mahoney also inspired her to release a full length concept album, I'm Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy. Although it only features 4 songs from the film, it is often relegated to the soundtrack bin and is usually left off her list of studio albums. It is a hidden gem from her back catalog and completely underrated. Featuring campy, 1930's jazz/big band influenced songs, all sung from the perspective of a gold digging gun moll, how can you go wrong? In 1990, Madonna was at the height of her popularity as the Queen of Pop, so for her to release an album of retro -jazz standards/showtunes was quite unexpected and shocking. In their review of the album, Rolling Stone magazine said: "No other pop star today could—or probably would - make an album like this." Very true....although it IS an album of pop music, only it's pop music from the 1930's/40's. It DID however include the house-infused #1 smash hit "Vogue", which besides it's references to old Hollywood film stars, is COMPLETELY out of place on the album.

I'm so excited by this post I can barely type! Behold the seXXXed up lezzie glaMOUR of Blonde On Blonde! It was a little known pop duo, started by Jilly Johnson and Nina Carter from the UK in 1977! The two blonde glamour models were made semi-famous by posing topless as "Page Three girls" in England's infamous tabloid newspaper The Sun. Of course, what better way to parlay that new found fame than to cut a record and become pop tarts? It's only logical. With their sexually suggestive name, they were known for their risqué album covers which featured overtly homoerotic overtones. Unfortunately, they really only saw any form of success in Japan...but their 1979 cover of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" is ridiculous and amazing! Blonde on Blonde is basically a 1970's disco version of Samantha Fox x2 OR a disco lesbian, non-twin version of Cherie & Marie Currie and I couldn't be happier!!

Here is the latest "issue" of Darian Darling Comics, which is an obvious homage to Botticelli's 1486 painting The Birth of Venus, the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. She was born fully formed as an adult from sea foam. After floating to the shores of Cyprus on a scallop shell, she is greeted by The Seasons, who dress her in golden robes and jewels.

This also serves as the prize for my Darian Darling Paper Doll Contest winner Nikki, who blew Hayley Heartbreak and I away with her two entries below! Nikki is now immortalized on the cover as one of The Stylists, who has greeted me on the shores of Battery Park with glitzy fashions in hand, after I have floated to Manhattan on a powder compact! <3

Behold the indisputable jailbait glaMOUR of teenage fashion model Karen Umphrey! Born in Los Angeles, Karen had a pretty traditional upbringing/school life but when she appeared as a model in the Nov. 1972 issue of Young'N Lovely TEEN Magazine, that all changed. Her photos were so popular she soon became the cover girl for their March 1973 issue. Her real claim to fame was her affiliation with STAR Magazine, a short lived teen publication created to capitalize on the trendy LA glitter rock scene and it's plethora of teenage groupies. She quickly became a regular at all the popular glam rock clubs of the era: The Whiskey A Go Go, Rainbow Bar & Grill and Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, befriending legendary groupies like Sable Starr, Lori Maddox and Queenie Glam. Modeling stints in Japan and Australia (where she appeared in Aussie Playboy) soon followed but she quit the business by the 80's. Prepare yourself for frizzy curls, fur, gold, glam, glitz and gorgeousness! Just how I like it.

Darling Delight: Suzy Home-Wrecker's XXXmas Cookies!

You can never really believe what you watch on TV...especially on 1950's sitcoms. Contrary to what you may have seen on reruns of The Donna Reed Show or Leave It To Beaver, housewives didn't prance around in heels and pearls, merrily twirling in their full swing skirts while baking or doing chores. Yes, women were homebound but it was hard work and a lot less glamorous. Damn. It's such an appealing fantasy, though. Personally, I think it's criminal NOT to bake in 6" stilettos but that's just me. But, unlike 50's TV housewives, I don't believe in being timid, weak or subservient to men. Yet, I do believe in being glamorous, beautiful and sexy. Femininity is a lost art form. It's possible to be a strong, powerful and sexual woman and yet still retain your femininity. Don't be afraid of it.

With that in mind I've created a very girlie and very pink Xmas cookie. The recipe was inspired by a cookie that my next door neighbor Miss Yvonne taught me to make. I was 16. She was 26. I would show up on her doorstep and she'd invite me in, pop open a bottle of wine and we'd get drunk, bake and talk trash! Move over Suzy Homemaker....

Suzy Home-Wrecker's XXXmas Cookies

Hot pink peppermint cookie with a creamy vanilla blonde swirl and frosted white chocolate peppermint icing

Ingredients

* 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

* 1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

* 1/2 teaspoon salt

* 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

* 1 cup sugar

* 1 egg yolk, at room temperature

* 1/2 teaspoon Simply Organic Peppermint Flavor

* 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure vanilla extract

* few drops hot pink food coloring, as desired

* 2 tablespoons cold water, as needed

Icing

* 2 cups white chocolate chips (1 bag)

* 1 tablespoon Crisco vegetable shortening

* 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy (5-6 broken candy canes)

Directions

Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg yolk and vanilla and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture. Add up to 2 tablespoons cold water beat until mixture turns from dry and crumbly into moist smooth ball.

Divide the dough in half. Add the peppermint extract and hot pink food coloring to the half and mix until even in color. Wrap both in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 10 min.

Roll out doughs separately between two sheets of wax paper to approximately 1/4-inch thickness and refrigerate for 10 min. Place vanilla dough on top of peppermint and press together around the edges. Using the waxed paper, roll dough into log. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Remove dough from the refrigerator and cut into 1/2-inch slices. Place cookies 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat and bake for 8 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking time. These cookies are best a bit underdone. Remove from oven and let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the icing you will need to melt the chocolate in a double boiler. A double boiler is a saucepan that holds hot water, and a bowl that fits securely over the saucepan. Begin by filling a saucepan with water from the tap but not so much that the bottom of the chocolate bowl touches the water. Heat the saucepan over low heat until it just begins to simmer, then turn off the stove and place a mixing bowl with the chocolate over the water. Let the chocolate begin to melt, and then stir it gently with a plastic spatula. When almost all of the chocolate is melted add the vegetable shortening, lift the top bowl from the saucepan and set it on the counter. Stir continuously until it is shiny, smooth, and completely melted.

Dip your cookies half way into the melted chocolate and place on a cookie sheet covered with waxed paper. While the chocolate is still melted, sprinkle with crushed peppermint candy. Chill in refrigerator until hardened.

Makes 24 cookies. I like to dip half the cookies in icing and leave the other dozen plain.

If I told you that America's sweetheart and iconic children's toy Barbie was based on a seXXXed up German comic-strip character, would you believe me? Well, it's true...and her name was Lilli! Created by the cartoonist Reinhard Beuthien, Lilli debuted in the German tabloid newspaper BILD in 1952, originally as a way to fill empty space.

Portraying the risqué misadventures of a tarty, sassy blonde "working girl" living life in the big city, Lilli was an oversexed fashionista who enjoyed keeping the company of rich men. While she did maintain a job as a secretary, she was definitely the type of girl who, like Holly Golightly in 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's "got $50 to go to the powder room". Because of it's bawdy humor the cartoon was an immediate smash hit and became a weekly feature.

"I must insist that at least one of you stops following me!"

"Yes, I kissed him, but I didn't want him to get too serious so I stopped him after three."

"No, I can't go out with you. I am too tired. I spent the whole day doing my laundry".

To cash in on the success of the character, BILD released an 11 1/2" Lilli novelty doll in 1955, aimed at adult male readers and sold them in bars and smoke shops as an erotic gag gift. Since the dolls produced up until this point were babies or toddlers marketed to girls, a doll with a voluptuous figure sold to men as a sexualized plaything was quite titillating.

A smaller 7 1/2" version of Lilli was also produced and could be playfully dangled from the rear view mirror of a car, on a little included swing. Who needs a mudflap girl when you can have a three-dimensional "sex pet"? The promotional material touted her lifestyle as "always discreet," and that her sexy wardrobe made her "the star of every bar"!

Although not originally intended for children, little German girls fell in love with shapely Lilli and a high quality wardrobe was later produced featuring the fashion trends of the 50's; tight sweaters, capri pants, sexy pencil skirts, outfits for parties, the beach and tennis as well as cotton swing skirts, nighties and traditional German Dirndl dresses.

By 1958 Lilli had become so popular in Germany that a feature film was produced called Lilli - ein Mädchen aus der Großstadt (Lilli — A Girl From the Big City). Portraying Lilli was a coveted role, so much so that a contest was held by BILD, who instructed it's female readers to send in their photos to compete for the role! Women from all over Germany entered the contest and BILD's offices were flooded with thousands of entries. In the end Danish actress Ann Smyrner was chosen as the winner.

While on a European vacation with her two children Barbara and Kenneth, Mattel Toys founder Ruth Handler spied sexpot Lilli in the window of a toy shop. Having already suggested the idea of an adult-figured fashion doll to a less than enthusiastic board of Mattel's directors, Lilli was exactly what she had in mind. She purchased three of them, gave one to her daughter and took the others back to show the Mattel board that a grown up doll with a womans body could work. She reworked the design and concept of sex kitten Lilli, transforming her into the "teenage fashion model" Barbie (named after her daughter), which Mattel launched in 1959.

Although the design was tweaked, side by side Lilli and the original Barbie are nearly identical! Barbie became a runaway success in the US, unbeknownst to the makers of Lilli, and Mattel discreetly bought up all patents and copyrights to the German doll by 1964. By the time the creators of the Lilli doll realized they had sold off their creation for ridiculously low lump sums, Barbie had already made Mattel such a success in the toy industry, their lawsuits were struck down in favor of the ever-growing American toy giant. Ooops!

So there you have it; the doll marketed to millions of American little girls as a wholesome teenager with a perfect life started out as a gold-digging, high class German hooker! I suppose it isn't any wonder that the Barbie doll has received a huge amount of criticism from feminist groups, who trumpet her as a poor role model with an unrealistic body type, producing unhealthy effects on the self-esteem and self-image of young girls. After all, she was inspired by a sex doll for adult men! I don't know about you but this little known fact always made me like Barbie MORE! Ha!

Wind is Your Enemy: Best Hairspray Glamour Choices!

When it comes to hair wind is NEVER your friend. It's your worst enemy. Sure, a strategically placed high-powered fan is good for dramatic effect, don't get me wrong. This amazing hairspray has been a cult beauty product for decades, coveted by celebrities, beauty insiders and freelance hairstylists alike. Launched in France in 1960, Elnett was a technological breakthrough containing special strong hold polymers that were diffused in an ultra-fine micro spray, and was easily removed with light brushing. Other hairsprays on the market at that time contained heavy lacquers which were very difficult to wash out. It was unavailable in the US due to it's higher VOC (volatile organic compounds) levels and FDA regulations—and smuggled back from Europe by the suitcasefull! Ok, this is definitely my secret weapon! Part of a haircare line from Italy, this spray is for when you don't want your hair to move....ever! I use this on my bangs on windy days and I could seriously be held upside down and my bangs wouldn't lift up. No...seriously! It's unbelievable! It's a fast-drying aerosol spray with an insane extra-firm hold, it keeps your style in place while protecting your hair from UV rays, contains anti-ageing Vitamin E and a light silicone for shiny hair. You will definitely need to use a clarifying shampoo after this or wash an extra time or two to remove all excess buildup. An extra step yes but well worth that amount of staying power.

Oh, how I love a fashionable groupie/rock star wife! One of my favorites is Cyrinda Foxe! This stunning blonde beauty grew up an army brat named Katheleen Hetzekian, but dreams of fame and fortune brought her to NYC in the early 70's. After a glamed up name change, she began hanging out in the arty downtown scene, frequenting hot spots like Max's Kansas City and partying with Andy Warhol and his Factory Superstars. While working as a publicist, Cyrinda "made the acquaintance" of several rock stars of the era like David Bowie, with who she began an affair and later appeared in the Mick Rock directed music video for 1972's The Jean Genie. In 1977 she married New York Dolls frontman David Johansen (only for a tumultuous, drug hazed year) and tried her hand at acting (as any good Warhol Superstar did) in Andy Warhol's BAD. She ditched Johansen in 1978, marring Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler which lasted for 9 years (Seeing as how the New York Dolls and Aerosmith shared the same management, it was quite convenient). Like any ex-rock star wife...there was a tell-all book published in 1997, Dream On: Livin' on the Edge with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith. Ooops. Get into her glitter rock glaMOUR!

NYC Nights: Amanda Lepore's BIG TOP Finale!

Sooner or later everything in NYC comes to an end....especially in nightlife. Restaurants come and go, nightclubs open and close, parties get cancelled. On Thanksgiving Eve one of my favorites did just that: Amanda Lepore's decadent circus themed Big Top at Carnival breathed it's last cotton candy scented breath. During it's 7 month run, Big Top won Best Gay Night at PAPER Magazine's 2010 Nightlife Awards and Best Bar/Club Party at the 2010 Glammy Awards. It's seXXXed up carnival atmosphere complete with circus freaks, burlesque dancers and nearly naked go-go boys made this the most exciting thing to do on a Wednesday night. So imagine my delight when Amanda asked me to be a Special Guest Host for the grand finale! What a night it was! Everyone who's anyone came out to show face and celebrate. Not only did techno-colored scenester Raquel Reed debut her new music video but there also a fashion show by the amazing Julia Clancey, featuring ME as one of the runway models! Big Top definitely went out with a big bang. After the festivities ended me, Amanda, Kenny Kenny and crew headed over to Coffee Shop for a celebratory Thanksgiving "Deakfast" and kiki session (for new readers to my blog that is the elusive meal somewhere between dinner and breakfast). I've known David and Phillipe for years and have worked as a makeup artist on many of their fashion shows. My lovely and talented photographer friend, Veronica iBarra has been wanting to do a Candy Darling inspired shoot with me since 2005! She was one of the many people to notice my striking resemblance to this NYC transgendered icon and Warhol Superstar. It was never an intentional thing. I didn't even know who Candy Darling was before I moved to NYC. The more I researched her, the more amazed I was by our vast similarities. The main thing (besides the obvious), is that we are both fascinated with the glamorous blonde icons that inspired us as children. Candy emulated the 1930's/40's/50's screen sirens she grew up watching like Lana Turner, Jean Harlow and Kim Novak, while I have always done the same, only with 1970's/80's/90's stars like Madonna, Debbie Harry and Courtney Love.

When Lady Starlight asked me to guest host her 70's glam rock party, Lady Starlight's English Disco in 2006, I of course needed a stage name. Since the other stars of the party used names like Breedlove, Anna Copa Cabanna, Veronica Vain and Hollywood Starr, just using Darian simply wouldn't work. She thought about it for a moment and said "You're Darian Darling, obviously". At first I was a bit leery of using it. I didn't want to be disrespectful or come off as a Candy impersonator but she assured me it was a homage and the right choice. And it was. I've learned never to question Starlight's instincts. When she tells you to do something...you do it! I used it again in 2007 when I worked the door at Lady GaGa and Lady Starlight's party New York Street Revival and Trash Dance. After that the name stuck and I've been Darian Darling ever since.

This was my wonderful Grandma Cáceres' recipe. She used to make it for my mom in the 1940's/50's and then made it for my cousins and I in the 1960's/70's/80's. She taught me how to make it when I was 7 and it was the first thing I learned how to bake. All the Corn Flake Cereal Cookies I've seen involve flour and some sort of dough so this recipe is quite unusual. Since it's a retro cookie with a lot of nostalgia I thought who better to link it to than Candy Darling, who shwerked a 1940's/50's inspired look during the 1960's/70's.

The Candied Darling Cookie

Ingredients:

* 4 extra-large egg whites, at room temperature

* 1 cup sugar

* 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure vanilla extract

* 1/2 box Corn Flakes cereal

* 1/2 box Special K cereal

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

In the bowl of an electric mixer whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Add the sugar and vanilla and whip until incorporated.

Add the Corn Flakes and Special K into the egg whites, mixing together well- but do NOT mash.

Drop by spoonfuls into mounds on greased cookie sheet.

Bake for 7-12 minutes or until golden in color.

Allow to cool on a wire rack.

Makes 48 cookies.

Paper dolls were first made popular in mid-18th century France. Called pantins (dancing puppet), these jointed dolls were hand drawn and came with paper fashions. By 1820, they were imported to America as inexpensive children's toys and became the cut out variety we know today. They have remained popular with children and collectors alike by usually featuring popular characters or celebrities and their glamorous wardrobes. I have been fascinated by the beauty of these dolls since I was a child and have collected them for many years. Spending countless hours flipping through their pages and admiring the beautifully rendered outfits, they can most surely be called the catalyst for my love and appreciation of fashion illustration.

Well this Blonde Icon is surely undisputable....who doesn't love Miss Piggy?! Moi has preserved a soft spot for this porky beauty since moi was a child. An outrageously glamorous, fame whoring pig, Miss Piggy debuted on Jim Henson's The Muppet Show in 1976. Born Miss Piggy Lee (a tounge-n-cheek reference to 50's chanteuse Peggy Lee), Piggy came from modest beginnings on a farm (a fact which she is quick to gloss over) and first broke into show business by winning the Miss Bogen County beauty contest. If vous loves it when the maple syrup from your pancakes spills onto your bacon and then eating them both in one delicious bite....vous will surely enjoy this recipe. Kissy Kissy!

The Breakfast in Bed à la Moi Cupcake
golden blonde maple/bacon cupcake with lavender satin frosting and accessorized with sugar pearls.

Ingredients:

* 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
* 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
* 3 large eggs, at room temperature
* 1 box french vanilla instant pudding mix
* 1 cup all purpose flour

* 1 cup cake flour
* 1 teaspoon baking powder

* 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
* 3/4 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
* 1/4 cup Grade A Dark Amber pure maple syrup
* 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure vanilla extract
* 1/4 teaspoon Frontier Natural Flavors maple flavor

* 1/2 teaspoon bacon drippings

* 1 cup cooked Applewood smoked bacon (10 thick strips), chopped

For the frosting:

* 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
* 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure vanilla extract
* 1/4 cup Grade A Dark Amber pure maple syrup

* 1/8 teaspoon Frontier Natural Flavors maple flavor
* 8-10 drops violet food color
* 1 1/2 boxes confectioners' sugar, sifted

* 1 tablespoon water, as needed
* edible sugar pearls, for garnish

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line 2 (12-cup) muffin pans with silver foil cupcake papers.

In a large frying pan cook small batches of bacon until it is crisp. Allow to cool and drain on a paper towel lined plate, then chop into chocolate chip sized pieces. Pour the leftover bacon drippings into a container and place in the refrigerator to solidify.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter, bacon drippings and sugar on medium-high speed for 3 to 5 minutes, until light yellow and fluffy. You can NEVER beat the butter/sugar too much. Crack the eggs into a small bowl. With the mixer on medium speed, add the eggs 1 at a time, scraping down the bowl once during mixing. Add the vanilla extract, maple syrup and maple flavor. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, sift together the flours, baking powder, instant pudding mix and salt. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk to the batter in 3 parts, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Add bacon bits. Mix until incorporated. Do not mix the batter too much.

Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake tins about 2/3 filled. Bake in oven for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Test the cupcakes with a toothpick for doneness. Remove from oven and cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whip attachment, combine the butter, vanilla, maple syrup, maple flavor and food color on low speed. Add the confectioners' sugar and increase the speed to high , mixing until very light and fluffy, adding water as needed.

Garnish with sugar pearls. Pig out!

Makes 24 cupcakes

In 1955 Marilyn Monroe tired of the Hollywood rat race and moved back east looking for a fresh start. She had recently went through a painful divorce from baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and her latest film There's No Business Like Show Business received terrible reviews from critics. She longed for a respected career as a serious actress and was fed up with the dumb blonde roles being assigned to her. You must remember that this was an era in Hollywood when actors were "owned" by the movie studio they were under contract with and had to film whatever role the studio execs deemed appropriate. Marilyn was also still committed to a contract made before she became a star, getting paid a mere $1,500 a week when co-stars with less star power were being paid much more. So she broke her contract with 20th Century Fox, was virtually blacklisted in Hollywood and started studying with Lee Strasberg at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York City. Marilyn adored her new found freedom in NYC and loved being able to blend into it's teeming masses. She would become the first actress to form her own film production company, and later renegotiated her studio contract. The newly formed Marilyn Monroe Productions would be paid $100,000 plus a share of profits for each film. In addition to being able to work for other studios, Marilyn had the right to reject any script, director or cinematographer she did not approve of. Marilyn remained in New York, off and on until 1961 and even after returning to LA, retained her NYC apartment as a second home.

The majority of these amazing photos were taken during a single week in March 1955 by NYC based photographer Ed Feingersh. He had been assigned to shadow Marilyn for a Redbook cover story titled "The Marilyn Monroe You've Never Seen", and a few of his photos ended up being published. But when Feingersh died, several rolls of film were discovered from those candid sessions and show a different and rarely seen Marilyn, not the showbiz persona but the casual, struggling NYC actress. They were collected for the first time in the now out of print, must have book Marilyn Fifty-Five. These are some of my favorite photos of Marilyn, and the mix of her ethereal beauty combined with the urban grit of NYC....it's quite the magical combination.

....aaaaaand the award for my "favorite 90's supermodel" goes to.....Nadja Auermann! I mean, who wouldn't want to look like this stunning German glamazon? She was discovered at a Berlin cafe and was quickly signed to Elite in 1991. She was working steady for a few years but her career really skyrocketed in 1993 when she decided to bleach her hair platinum blonde. Her resemblance to Marlene Dietrich (which was pointed out by fashion designer Valentino) conveniently coincided with fashion's return to old school Hollywood glamour during the mid-90's, which further escalated her to "supermodel" status. She was also one of the few models to grace the cover of two fashion magazines at the same time, Sept. 1994's US Vogue and US Harper's Bazaar. Get. Into. It.

This Friday, The Precious Empire showed NYC how to Rock'N Roll!! Taking advantage of the break in between the North American and European dates of Lady GaGa's Monster Ball Tour, my best friends Semi Precious Weapons launched their 13 city headlining Dirty Showbiz Tour featuring my other BFFs Breedlove and Lady Starlight. Playing to a crowd of over 1000 screaming fans, each performer sold it to the back row and blew the roof off of Irving Plaza (where SPW played a year ago on the Perez Hilton Presents Tour). Also, as a special treat for the East Coast dates The Dirty Pearls were added to the list of opening acts. They're not only the hottest rock dudes in NYC but also St. Jerome regulars and even trumpet master/crooner Brian Newman made a guest appearance. An onstage performance piece by moi (where I powdered my face and stared at myself in the mirror, while looking bored) during Breedlove's set only further added to the filthy glaMOUR! It was a perfect evening for our NYC family and a monumental night for our movement....the only one missing was a certain little Lady. Also, some of the most gorgeous names in NYC nightlife glitterati were in attendance including Ladyfag, Miss Guy, Becka Diamond, Tommy Hottpants, Kayvon Zand, Kelle Calco and Mike Furey from Dangerous Muse. Total win! Cheers to the NEW New York!

Blonde Beauty Icon Millie the Model

Millie the Model was yet another tarty blonde Good Girl Art comic book, originally published in 1945 by what would later become Marvel Comics. It was a humorous romance/adventure series that followed the misadventures of NYC career girl and fashion model for the fictional Hanover Agency, Millie Collins. Usual stories involved Millie getting sexually harassed by strange men, stroking the bruised ego of her jealous photographer boyfriend Clicker, and incurring the wrath of her redheaded "frienemy" and fellow model Chilli Storm. The series was drawn by many artists over the years but the iconic Millie was rendered by Dan DeCarlo, who would later create the characters in Archie Comics and Josie and the Pussycats. Since the series ran from 1945 through 1973, it provides a wonderful visual timeline for the radically changing trends in womens fashion; from 1940's shoulder padded glaMOUR, to 50's bombshell sheath dresses, to the mod minis of the 60's and the groovy looks of the early 70's! Who says comic books can't be fashionable?

Here is the latest video from my boys Semi Precious Weapons, Look At Me, off their major label debut album You Love You. I worked on the video as the key makeup artist. It features not only the band (Justin, Cole, Dan and Stevy) but also fellow Precious Empire member The Jocelyn, as well as the gorgeous Krista Ayne. We shot it in January 2010, during the same week the videos for Semi Precious Weapons AND Magnetic Baby were filmed! Oh, and also during SPW/GaGa's 4 shows at Radio City Music Hall! Talk about a busy week. It was filmed on location at a seedy motel in New Jersey, coincidently called the Starlite Motel (Lady Starlight couldn't be with us, but Breedlove was in attendance). It's an amazing, filthy, cliché motel with heart shaped whirlpool bathtubs, coin operated vibrating round beds, tacky carpet, the works! It's genius!

As you can see in this behind the scenes photo, Breedlove got into the spirit of things by skinny dipping in the heart shaped tub!

Since this ballad is quite a departure from their usual filthy party rock style, Justin wanted that difference reflected in the makeup looks as well. His beauty routine is usually much more intense and glamorous, so I kept the makeup very soft and raw by using taupe and peach cream shadows and highlighters, a bit of brown mascara and some lip balm. This showcased his natural beauty and complimented the tenderness of the song, as well as the unkempt, steamy filthiness of the location. I replicated the same look on the girls as well, though with all the action on the bed and the humid temperature of the room, they could barely keep in on!

An "actress" and "model", she's been an LA fixture since the early 80's, when a series of handbills baring her photo started to appear around the city. She soon transitioned to huge billboards, paid by, in her words "investors" which became a Hollywood pop culture landmark. She can often be spotted around Hollywood, driving in her pink Corvette with vanity license plates reading "ANGLYNE", and toting around her pink Maltese dog, Buddah. She even ran for California Governor in 2003!! Her slogan during the campaign was "We’ve had Gray (Gov. Gray Davis), we’ve had Brown (Gov. Jerry Brown), now it’s time for some blond and pink." Behold a NYC legend, kids! Teri Toye was a fashion model, an "it-girl", a downtown nightlife personality and a muse to pop art designer Stephen Sprouse. She also happened to be transgendered! She moved to NYC to study art and fashion but quickly became a fixture on the early 80's downtown club scene and happened into a modeling career by chance. After befriending Stephen Sprouse and walking in his show, she caused a sensation in the fashion world, signed with CLICK Models and walked for everyone from Chanel to Thierry Mugler to Jean Paul Gaultier. By 1987 she suddenly vanished from the NYC scene, with her surprising disappearance becoming somewhat of an urban legend. She only recently resurfaced for the 2009 launch of the retrospective coffee table book, The Stephen Sprouse Book. Teri is quite the pioneer, as very few transgendered women have found any sort of fame or success in mainstream culture. She was able to achieve what Candy Darling had wanted to achieve a mere 10 years earlier: to have a legitimate and respected career. It's no small feat, even today.

Well, I have honestly struggled with trying to add a bit of racial diversity to the blog. There are very few women of color brave enough to blonde...and the bravest is obviously Lil' Kim! A native NY'er from Bed-Sty, Brooklyn, Kimberly Jones spent most of her youth living on the streets and working odd jobs. When she met her future mentor, rap superstar The Notorious B.I.G, her musical career jumped off. Christened Lil' Kim as a reference to her 4'11" height, Biggie recruited her into his posse of rap protegees, dubbed Junior M.A.F.I.A. and they released an album in 1995. Because of her overtly sexual yet tough persona and barely there, $tripper chic outfits, she soon began making guest appearances on several hip-hop albums before releasing her debut solo album, Hard Core in 1996. Last night was another magical NYC evening! My hunky BFF Tommy Hottpants and the stunning Miss Guy invited me to go see one of my favorite bands, Blondie. They are currently on the North American leg of their Endangered Species Tour, which is promoting their soon to be released album Panic of Girls. Their set was a perfect blend of all the classic hits mixed with some of their killer new tracks....and a few covers. Debbie Harry is a rock'n roll goddess, a NYC icon and a fucking blonde legend! She's 65, still looks amazing and sounds AWESOME! She's always been a singer that really delivers live and doesn't disappoint with her vocals. I scored some sweet VIP All Access passes for my collection and had a fabulous time.

Will all teenage girls start dressing like rock'N roll whores? HELL YES, if Madonna has anything to say about it. Macy's recently debuted their new Juniors line Material Girl, "designed" by Madonna and her daughter Lola and named after the Queen of Pop's 1985 #2 hit single. If that wasn't good enough, they got rock'N roll teen tart Taylor Momsen to be the spokesperson! Huge win! The line actually looks really hot and is MUCH better than Madonna's previous collaborations with H&M in 2006/2007 (remember that tracksuit?). The line seems like the perfect fusion of Madonna's classic mid-80's Boy Toy look; frills, lace, beads and bangles with Taylor Momsen's brand of neo-grunge glaMOUR; flannel shirts, studded leather, floral print baby-doll dresses and acid washed denim. I mean, ANY fashion collection aimed at teenage girls that contains a spandex bra top is fine with me. Will I be featuring any of it? Well, I haven't checked out the line in person yet (and the fact that being 30 and buying clothes marketed to 16 year old's would sorta make me feel like a douchebag)...but we'll see. As Madonna said "I have no shame! I'm on FIRE!".

A delicious new feature to the blog; my "life" told through comic book covers!!! Could you die?! The concept is the result of the lovely piece of fan art below, which I received from a very talented graphic artist (and avid reader of my blog) from New Zealand, Hayley Heartbreak. The entire project is inspired by our mutual admiration for Good Girl Art, the vintage sexpot glaMOUR of "Golden Age" comic book characters like Torchy Todd, Venus, Millie the Model and Hedy De Vine, as well as modern day interpretations like Eve Kitten.

What will happen to me next? Only time will tell.....

Let's face it; the siren call of peroxide can be pretty overwhelming. A luscious mane of flaxen tresses is quite the coveted beauty trait, something that has been desirable in many cultures for centuries. The appeal of blonde hair in the modern age is unparalleled. It is undoubtedly the highest requested color process in most hair salons, and the old adages of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "Blondes Have More Fun" certainly have perpetuated this. I'm wet all over again! I just stumbled upon this old Gucci ad campaign for their Fall/Winter 2006 collection. Did everyone else think this was a completely life changing moment when it came out....or was it just me? Part Helmut Newton shoot, part Michelle Pfeiffer in 1983's Scarface, this photo story really made me go for the gold and feature some SERIOUS rich bitch, 1979 high class prostitute looks throughout 2006/2007. The sleek platinum blonde bob, the ankle strap stiletto shoes, the flowing polyester disco dresses with matching hosiery, the oversize tinted sunglasses, the glitzy gold jewelry...it was all TOO fucking good. Even Gwen Stefani shwerked it on the album artwork for 2006's The Sweet Escape. Ugh, seeing this makes me want to go back to this look. Listen! Can you hear the disco calling....

Ask any fashionista and she'll tell you that a Little Black Dress is a wardrobe staple. While I thoroughly agree, I also think a Little Black Beret is a fashion necessity! Stylistically it's completely diverse, conjuring up images of Parisienne ingenues, beatnik existentialists, soldiers in Special Military Forces or even downtown bohemian artists. It's also been a glaMOUR choice for many blondes throughout the years, and adds a touch of romance to any outfit. N°5 Parfum by Chanel

Chic. Classic. Legendary. Unforgettable. These are only some of the words that can be used to describe Coco Chanel's groundbreaking original fragrance N°5. This past Sunday I was invited to come check out the atelier of Priestess NYC, an amazing fashion line designed by foxy blond Cody Ross. He's a NYC scenester and fan of me and my blog...how could I possibly say no? I joined up with my peeps, the HOUSE of BaD kIDs!'s Richard Kennedy and Leigh Gerber and headed to the West Village! The line (which is sold at Patricia Field's legendary NYC boutique) is an eclectic mix of transgression, kitsch and street-style; featuring asymmetrical jackets, elongated compression dresses, and quirky silk prints (of sperm, weaponry, piranha and blowfish!). Part ‘80s revival, part futurism with a smattering of goth-glam, Priestess NYC encapsulates urban-girl cool with a modern take on punk couture. Think vintage Westwood meets Margiela meets Jeremy Scott. In any event I'm totally into it! I saw some pieces that I will not be able to live without and hope to have in my collection VERY soon. After looking at all those clothes, what else was there to do but go to a Drunk Brunch and get wasted?! Since we were already in the West Village we decided to go to Diablo Royale on West 10th St. It's a high class Mexican jam that has AMAZING food and a bitchin' white sangria drink special; $22 for food AND unlimited drinks! BOOM! I might have double fisted. Ooops.
