Lil' Blonde Darling: Martha Stewart!

Blonde Beauty Icon Martha Stewart

This came as quite a shock to me BUT did you know homemaking queen Martha Stewart used to be a fashion model?!?! One of my oldest and dearest friends was just featured on The Martha Stewart  Show yesterday, making crafts and treats for Halloween. She invited me to hang with her backstage and be part of the live studio audience. Walking through the backstage catacombs of Martha's Chelsea studio, I discovered an entire wall of her old black and white modeling shots. I was amazed! Originally from New Jersey, Martha started modeling when she was still in high school for various upscale NYC department stores as well as TV commercials and print ads. Working for magazines like Glamour and Mademoiselle during the early 60's is what paid her college tuition. Her modeling career was boosted even further when Glamour magazine voted her one of America's 10 best dressed college students in 1961. Of course the rest is history; she went on to become a multi-millionare business magnate, author and TV personality. See! You can bake, be a homemaker and still be beautiful, blonde and fabulous!!

Lil' Blonde Darling: Drew Barrymore!

Blonde Beauty Icon Drew Barrymore

I miss the early/mid 90's Drew Barrymore! Before she became the queen of cutesy, cuddley romantic comedies or a karate chopping Angel....she was a teenage tramp! A notoriously troubled child star with Hollywood royal heritage, she was a Studio 54 regular,  a drunk AND a cokehead by the time she was 13! After a successful stint in rehab, Drew cleaned up her act and returned to work. Her comeback role? A manipulative, teenage Lolita with a murderous streak in the 1992 erotic thriller Poison Ivy. A box office bomb when released, the film has attained cult status thanks to late night cable and VHS. It is one of my all time favorites. Drew was so good and convincing as the psychopathic seductress "Ivy",  I'm not sure why she's chosen not to play more villains. She did play real-life "Long Island Lolita" Amy Fisher in one of the many 1993 TV biopics, as well as a suicidal, bi-polar teenage runaway in the 1995 Gen-X drama Mad Love. Her looks were so good during this era; trashy bleached blonde hair, leather jackets, too much eye shadow, lot's of skin. I guess we all grow out of our rebellious, teen angst. Damn.

Looks like trouble!

Lil' Blonde Darling: Cheryl Ladd!

Blonde Beauty Icon Cheryl Ladd

Once upon a time there were 3 little girls who went the the police academy.....and one of those girls was Cheryl Ladd! Given the daunting task of replacing superstar Farrah Fawcet-Majors after she abruptly left Charlie's Angels at the end of the first season, Cheryl won the hearts of viewers with her bubbly portrayal of Kris Munroe; the kid sister of Farrah's character Jill. She proved to be so popular with the public that she remained an Angel for the rest of the series run (1977-1981). Written as a gullible, naïve rookie, her character matured as the series progressed and she became quite assertive and glamorous. Frequently going undercover dressed in a string bikini, she somehow always manged to conceal a handgun. Now that's a real detective! Originally wanting to be a singer, Cheryl parlayed her newly found fame into a record deal and released a Top 40 pop album in 1978. When the series ended, Cheryl went on to act in over 30 made for TV movies and a few feature films, including the 1992 erotic thriller Poison Ivy starring future Angel, Drew Barrymore.
